Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country will contribute $270 million to help Ukraine purchase military assets for its continued defense against Russia’s invasion. On Tuesday’s “Morning Joe,” Joe Scarborough praised the Canadian government and several European leaders for stepping up to fill the void he said is being left by Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Ukraine has “time and time again” been “battered and abused” by the president, according to Scarborough. Administration officials, he said, have largely abandoned an ally while claiming that “Russia is on the verge of winning this war.” However, the MS NOW host argued that “the facts on the ground simply do not back that up.”
“The Ukrainians, they can do this with us or they can do this without us,” he said.
Without the U.S. leading the way, other NATO countries have stepped in — an act of solidarity Scarborough called “remarkable.”
Trump’s behavior toward Ukraine is part of a larger trend of hatred toward Europe within the administration, Scarborough suggested. “I know people have heard me say this time and again, but there’s a reason why I’ve said it. You’ve got people in the administration, like JD Vance, who hates Europe; Donald Trump, who hates Europe — so many other people hate Europe,” he said.
Scarborough questioned why Trump would abandon U.S. allies to cozy up to leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Why wouldn’t the United States want to be shoulder to shoulder with such powerful allies? That’s a question for Donald Trump and historians to answer. Because for the life of me, I cannot figure out why he continues to try to save Vladimir Putin, the guy who’s invaded Ukraine, who invaded Georgia, who wants to invade other European countries as well.”
“Donald Trump is on the wrong side of history. The Republican Party is on the wrong side of history. And yet, who’s stepping into that void? Canadians, Europeans, the British,” Scarborough said. “And it’s making a big difference.”
