The United States military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran on Wednesday night in response to Iranian attacks a day earlier, U.S. Central Command announced.
“U.S. forces began launching strikes against Iran at 8 p.m. ET today,” CENTCOM said in a post on X. “The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on U.S. forces based in the Middle East.”
The military did not immediately identify the targets or provide additional details on the operation.
President Donald Trump signaled earlier Wednesday that military action was imminent, telling reporters that Iran should expect a forceful response.
“We’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “They know it’s coming.”
According to CENTCOM, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple ballistic missiles Tuesday in what the U.S. described as an attempted “surprise attack.” All of the missiles were intercepted, and no casualties were immediately reported.
After the attempted IRGC missile attack Tuesday night, U.S. and Saudi forces launched precision airstrikes against logistics and weapons sites used by the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces in eastern Iraq.
U.S. officials alleged the targeted sites had been used to support attacks on American forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. CENTCOM said the strikes were a response to more than 30 IRGC-directed drone attacks over the previous 72 hours, all of which they said failed to hit U.S. forces.
The latest military action marks another escalation in the monthslong confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Prior to the fresh round of skirmishing, both countries had temporarily halted attacks as mediators sought to bring both sides back to the negotiating table and revive the fragile ceasefire.
