President Donald Trump is hosting vulnerable Republican incumbents facing tough re-election contests for dinner in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday, according to a White House official with knowledge of the invitations.
The invitees include GOP lawmakers who are locked in competitive races this November, according to the official, who declined to provide a full list of the Republican attendees. Politico was first to report news of the dinner.
The White House event comes one week ahead of the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Texas, which Trump is slated to headline. The president’s televised convention at such a tenuous time for his party has reportedly raised alarm within his inner circle.
It also coincides with Trump’s dwindling approval ratings and policies that are weighing down Republicans, including his trade war with Canada, renewed strikes on Iran and his decision to bolster foreign imports of ground beef. All have created challenging conditions for GOP candidates this fall, in a year that has come to be defined by rising costs and affordability.
It was not immediately clear whether the lawmakers invited to the White House Wednesday evening are among those who plan to attend the midterm convention.
Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC has amassed a war chest of more than $400 million. But so far, little of that money has been spent to support vulnerable GOP incumbents who are eager for such financial backing and political support as the GOP faces a consequential contest for power of Congress.
