* A devastating death toll: “More than 1,114 have been declared dead in Nepal after last week’s devastating floods, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Over 3,916 others are still missing, including at least 583 foreign nationals. In Tibet, at least 16 people were killed and 546 are missing, according to CGTN, China’s English-language satellite news channel.”
* The world notices the White House’s failures: “Nearly every session at the Group of 20 meeting of finance ministers and central bankers in Asheville, N.C., this week began with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent extolling the state of the U.S. economy under President Trump and urging other countries to be more like America. America’s allies were not always receptive. At several points, representatives from Europe, Canada and other nations friendly to the United States criticized the administration for moves that they say have hurt their economies.”
* A group of sailors deserving of a break: “After nine grueling months, the nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the beleaguered USS Abraham Lincoln are finally getting some relief. The aircraft carrier was spotted heading into port near Pattaya, Thailand, Wednesday morning local time for what the Navy calls a ‘liberty port call,’ marking the first time the service members will have extensive free time on land for rest and relaxation after having their time at sea extended multiple times in the Iran war.”
* On Capitol Hill: “House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his leadership team announced they are eyeing punishment for two House Democrats who bucked their party Tuesday. Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Jared Golden of Maine broke with leadership to advance a key procedural vote that revived Republicans’ legislative agenda. The incredibly rare crossing of party lines incensed many House Democrats and top leaders who were then forced to vote on a slate of GOP priorities.”
* Remind me, is this going to make America healthy again? “The Pentagon is again delaying its timelines to clean up ‘forever chemicals’ at hundreds of contaminated military sites across the United States, the third time in a year the department has extended estimates for completing a key phase of the cleanups.”
* The glorification crusade continues apace: “The U.S. Mint began selling $1 coins with President Donald Trump’s image on Wednesday, the latest instance of the president being added to federal government materials. The coins, which were announced in July, are being rolled out to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.”
* Will the Kennedy Center ever be the same? “The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts removed a famous outdoor sculpture from its grounds on Wednesday, the latest in a series of changes made as part of President Donald Trump’s takeover of the storied arts institution. A public notice from the National Park Service announced road closures beginning around 6 a.m. ‘at the request of The Kennedy Center for the removal of the ‘Blue’ Statue on The Kennedy Center grounds.’ The Kennedy Center did not announce the sculpture’s removal ahead of time.”
