President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed displeasure with the Justice Department’s decision to drop a felony charge against a former Olympian accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, excoriating his hand-picked U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, on social media.
“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool. I don’t know what she was thinking?” Trump posted on Truth Social. “To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM, that included the grass, which had a big 86 47 emblazoned in giant letters on it, and other elements of the surrounding area. There may have been some contractor difficulty, but the major damage was caused by VANDALS!”
Pirro filed a motion Friday evening to dismiss charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn after prosecutors determined that the damage to the Reflecting Pool’s liner was, in fact, due to the contractor’s “botched work.”
The landmark had undergone a $14 million renovation at Trump’s behest in the spring, but problems arose almost as soon as the work was completed. The pool water turned green due to algae, the liner at the bottom of the structure began coming off and the markings “86 47”— a phrase that the Trump administration has labeled a threat to kill the 47th U.S. president — were seen nearby on the National Mall lawn.
Trump has repeatedly blamed vandals and other culprits — including “radical left lunatics” and an ABC News correspondent — for the pool’s issues.
His preoccupation with the matter continued on Saturday.
Along with his criticism of Pirro, Trump posted on Truth Social a four minute-long video of the structure with several people reaching into the water, and wrote: “Look for yourselves at the VANDALISM that took place at The Reflecting Pool. The material is being cut with a knife or a box cutter, for all to see!”
