Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In Maine’s closely watched U.S. Senate race, there were plenty of polls showing Graham Platner running a very competitive race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins before the Democrat’s candidacy imploded. When Maine Democrats shifted to Troy Jackson, the former president of the Maine state Senate, it was an open question as to whether he would fare as well.
For now, that question appears to have an answer: The latest Fox News poll in Maine found Jackson narrowly ahead of the longtime GOP incumbent, 48% to 46%. (Fox’s poll in June found Collins leading Platner by 3 points.)
As for Maine’s open gubernatorial race, the same poll showed Democrat Hannah Pingree, the former state House speaker, leading Republican Bobby Charles, a former State Department official, by 11 points, 49% to 38%.
* The day after Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley scored an unexpected victory in the Democrats’ gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin, the new nominee emphasized the importance of bringing the party together and vowed to campaign with his top rival, democratic socialist Francesca Hong, as part of a “unity tour.”
* With two weeks remaining before South Carolina’s Senate special primary runoff election, Republican Sen. Tim Scott threw his support behind appointed Sen. Darline Graham, who’ll face Rep. Ralph Norman on Aug. 25. The winner will face Dr. Annie Andrews, a South Carolina pediatrician, who won the Democratic nomination.
* Republican Rep. Max Miller of Ohio didn’t need yet another negative headline, but he has one anyway. MS NOW reported, “Emily Moreno, who is embroiled in a contentious custody battle with her ex-husband, Rep. Max Miller, is suing the Ohio Republican and his attorney for releasing a nude photo of their 2-year-old daughter in documents Miller made public as he denied Moreno’s allegations of abuse. Moreno filed the lawsuit on behalf of their daughter in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio on Wednesday.” The GOP incumbent has denied any wrongdoing.
* In Minnesota, the Democratic and Republican nominees in this year’s gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races have one thing in common: They’re all women. The Washington Post, citing Rutgers University’s Center for American Women and Politics, reported that this has never happened before.
* And in Oklahoma’s Republican gubernatorial primary, Donald Trump has once again endorsed former Oklahoma Secretary of Budget Mike Mazzei over state Attorney General Gentner Drummond. The president appears quite determined to take Drummond down because he donated to Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.
