Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s real estate holdings were already a political mess. Not only has the Republican been accused of using an address where he did not live while voting in recent elections, he also has faced allegations that he and his estranged wife declared three separate homes as their primary residence in mortgage documents — a practice that his party has, in other situations, characterized as an outrageous abuse.
These controversies generated a broader question about just how many homes Paxton, the GOP’s Senate nominee in Texas this year, currently owns.
His 2026 opponent, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, recently told MS NOW’s Jen Psaki, “Since taking office, Ken Paxton has now become a multimillionaire, while our pay has remained stagnant for years, for decades. He now owns 11 homes, while most Texans can’t afford one.” MaddowBlog published a fact-check report last week that largely confirmed Talarico’s claim: Paxton, either in his personal capacity or through the trust that oversees his assets, owns five homes in Texas, three in Florida, two in Utah and one in Oklahoma. (Publicly available materials also point to a Paxton-owned lot in Hawaii, although there does not appear to be any structure on the property.)
Though it seems hard to believe, it now appears that Talarico understated matters.
The New York Times’ latest reporting advanced the story, noting the apparent fact that the Republican Senate hopeful, despite making $153,000 a year as attorney general, “recently bought three condominiums at a luxury resort in Utah.” From the article:
Mr. Paxton, 63, purchased the condos, worth a total of $1.6 million, in February, according to local property records, and transferred them to his blind trust. On the deeds, Mr. Paxton listed his address as a Dallas-area home. Police records indicate a woman who is not his wife lives there. […]
Public records reviewed by The Times show Mr. Paxton, his blind trust and another family trust now own at least 15 properties worth around $9 million.
Though this new report hasn’t been independently verified by MS NOW, Paxton and his team made little effort to push back against its details. Instead, a spokesperson for the scandal-plagued Texan told the newspaper, “Every time a fighter like Donald Trump and Ken Paxton stand up to the political elite, the same playbook comes out: dig through a man’s private life, string together puzzle pieces to draw the most damning conclusion.”
At no point has Paxton or his team denied, or taken any steps to explain, his many home purchases. The state attorney general’s campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment from MaddowBlog.
