A man suspected of protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement was arrested Monday after igniting fireworks outside a federal building in Manhattan that houses ICE’s New York field office, five law enforcement officials briefed on the situation told MS NOW.
The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was taken into custody after he set a shopping cart full of fireworks ablaze using a flame accelerant, the sources said. He also had two airsoft rifles and menaced pedestrians nearby, according to the sources, who described the suspect as an anti-ICE activist from New York. He has not yet been publicly identified.
Two people were injured and treated on scene, and another is being assessed for injuries, the sources said. The FBI and the New York Police Department are handling the investigation.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a post on social media. “The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far. FBI [Joint Terrorism Task Force] is investigating the incident.”
The 41-story building, located in lower Manhattan, also contains offices for the FBI and other federal agencies.
