OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Following confusion from lawmakers and Oklahomans surrounding Ryan Walters delayed resignation, the search for a new State Superintendent can begin.
The official resignation letter was submitted on Tuesday evening following a multiple page letter Walters sent to parents earlier in the day.
Former State Representative, Mark McBride telling KFOR, “He sent parents a political victory lap full of deflection, denial, and distraction.”
State lawmakers were also questioning whether or not Walters would submit a formal resignation or leave the state in limbo.
“The state superintendent likes to keep us confused and in chaos. It’s how he’s been leading this entire time he’s been state superintendent. So it’s not a huge surprise that this is how he’s leaving the office,” said Cyndi Munson, the House Minority Leader.
Now that Walters has submitted his resignation, one day before he begins his new position with the Teacher Freedom Alliance, the state is looking to Governor Stitt to fill the position.
“I imagine the governor started interviewing people. I imagine he’s getting that together because he knows that this is an incredibly important agency.” said Senator Julia Kirt, the Senate Minority Leader. “What I hope is happening is the governor’s ready.”
Governor Stitt has not made an announcement on who will be the next state superintendent.
