The Rev. Al Sharpton ripped President Donald Trump on Wednesday’s “The Beat,” calling out the president after he downplayed the economic struggles many Americans are facing as his war with Iran rages on.
Earlier this week, Trump was asked “to what extent”Americans’ financial situations have motivated him to make a deal to end the conflict.
“Not even a little bit,” he replied, telling reporters, “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran: They can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”
As the MS NOW host pointed out, Trump made those comments as he was departing for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he was joined by some of the country’s top business leaders. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang even hitched a ride on Air Force One.
“How contemptible is that to the American people?” the“Politics Nation” host asked. “He didn’t just say this at some backward rally somewhere. He said this on his way to hook up with his billionaire boys and board Air Force One that we’re paying for, to go over to China to try and work out some energy deals, some technology deals.”
“There’s no reason for them to be there,” he added. “If any other president had done this, he would be the first one calling for their impeachment.”
Sharpton said Trump was effectively “spitting in the face of Americans” by centering business leaders in this moment.
“It’s bad enough you’re rolling up the gas stations, and the price is $4.50 up. It’s bad enough groceries are up. But now you have the guy you voted for if you’re in a red state, or if you’re a member of MAGA, saying, ‘I’m not thinking about you.’”
“We’ve never had a president that would openly show how he does not care about the average American, doesn’t understand what they’re going through, and really has no compassion for them,” he added.
Sharpton said he believed Trump’s comments would make “even the most avid fan” of the president “question themselves.”
