Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* With just one day remaining before Indiana’s primaries, Donald Trump remains determined to bring down Republican state lawmakers who have balked at his demand for a new gerrymandered map.
* In the wake of Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices gutting the Voting Rights Act, two Republican governors, Alabama’s Kay Ivey and Tennessee’s Bill Lee, announced special sessions to redraw the states’ congressional districts.
* On a related note, the president announced he wants other states to follow Alabama’s and Tennessee’s lead, even if that means locals “have to vote twice” to maximize the GOP’s chances in this year’s midterm elections.
* In Georgia, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp is open to a redistricting gambit in his state, but he said it won’t happen before this fall’s elections.
* Speaking of Kemp, the Georgia governor set the date for a special election to fill the vacancy left by former Democratic Rep. David Scott, who died last month. The special election is now set for July 28.
* As Rep. Cory Mills confronts a series of scandals, the Florida Republican is facing a primary challenge from Ryan Elijah, who is best known for having worked as an anchor at the local Fox affiliate.
* Kansas hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1932, but incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall will likely face an interesting challenge from the Rev. Adam Hamilton, the pastor of the largest United Methodist Church in the United States who last week launched a Democratic Senate campaign.
* In the latest national Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, Democrats enjoyed a five-point advantage over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot, 49% to 44%, which is up from a two-point lead in the same poll in February. Among those who described themselves as absolutely certain to vote, however, the Democrats’ advantage grew to nine points.
* And if you’re having trouble keeping track of all the many interesting races worth watching in May, Bolts magazine put together a handy guide.
