Member of Vance’s protective detail subject of investigation, Secret Service says

A member of Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail is the subject of an internal investigation and potential criminal inquiry “involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” according to a Secret Service spokesman.

Last week, MSNow published a story about agents on the Vice President’s detail being “fed up” with the hastily arranged travel, including taking his son to a golf lesson on a helicopter. The story caught the eye of senior leaders at the Secret Service and FBI, a source told ABC News.

“A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” according to Anthony Gugliemei, the Secret Service director of communications. “While we will not comment on the specifics of this matter, one principle is unequivocal: any conduct that potentially threatens the safety of a protectee will not be tolerated.”

The vice president’s office did not respond to ABC News’ request for comment on the detail leader’s suspension.

The suspension comes as senior Secret Service officials told reporters on Wednesday they’ve handled 10,000 threat-related cases for their protectees this year, including President Donald Trump, noting the threats are increasing in volume and complexity.
