A House Democrat on Thursday called on President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, to testify about his and his family’s ties to Andrew and Tristan Tate, the misogynistic podcasters facing dozens of sexual abuse charges in the United Kingdom.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, a member of the House Oversight Committee, demanded Barron’s testimony and investigations into the Trump family’s ties to the scandal-plagued brothers. The Tates, who have been lionized by members of Trump’s administration and the MAGA movement more broadly, face potential extradition to the United Kingdom stemming from charges of rape, sexual assault, and — in Andrew Tate’s case — possession of “indecent images of a child.” The brothers have denied any wrongdoing.
A recent episode of the “Why is this Happening?” podcast from MS NOW’s Chris Hayes spotlighted the Tate brothers’ promotion of violence toward — and subjugation of — women. The podcast interview was centered on The New Yorker’s Heidi Blake’s article “Andrew Tate’s Empire of Abuse,” which featured reporting about Andrew Tate’s apparent communication with Barron Trump, which MS NOW has not confirmed and a Tate spokesperson has denied. Blake’s report touches on previous reporting that at least one Trump administration official played a role in pressuring Romania to allow the men to fly to the United States as they faced human trafficking charges in Romania. That official, special envoy for special missions Richard Grenell, has said he has had “no substantive conversation” with Romania’s foreign minister on the subject.
In a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., Ansari said, “Recent reporting and public disclosures raise extremely grave national security, diplomatic, and ethical concerns about whether political networks in the President’s orbit, including members of his family, and other public officials leveraged their influence to shield these two men who are facing grave riminal indictments on human trafficking, sexual assault, and exploitation of minors, among other appalling offenses.”
She went on to reference reports about the Tate brothers’ communications with Barron Trump, 20, and other members of the president’s inner circle.
The Committee must investigate whether back-channel communications between the Tate brothers, presidential advisors, and members of the First Family such as Barron Trump influenced official actions or administration policy regarding criminal prosecution and investigation of the brothers or international law enforcement cooperation.
Her letter calls on Comer to issue subpoenas for Barron Trump to testify before Congress about his potential “knowledge of the Tate brothers’ crimes,” along with any White House and federal agency logs that may document communications officials had about “custody, travel restrictions, passport status, or extradition of Andrew and Tristan Tate.”
Neither the White House nor Comer’s office immediately responded to MS NOW’s request for comment.
Without mentioning the Tate brothers specifically, Donald Trump in 2024 credited Barron for connecting him with MAGA-friendly internet streamers and podcasters. As I explained around that time, the president’s rhetoric during the campaign frequently mirrored the misogynistic schlock that the Tate brothers have successfully monetized. The White House said Thursday it doesn’t plan to interfere with the U.K.’s extradition request. But given the Trump White House’s obfuscation and efforts to paper over the Epstein files, there’s little reason to take them at their word. And clearly, Ansari isn’t.
With Republicans in control of the House and with the GOP broadly having demonstrated their willingness to carry water for Trump – even when it comes to investigations of sex crimes allegations – it seems unlikely the Republican-led Oversight Committee will take up Ansari’s request.
But the congresswoman’s letter arguably raises the stakes for November’s midterm elections. If Democrats take control of the House and obtain subpoena power, it seems fair to suspect the Tates’ ties to Team Trump and the broader conservative movement will be a target.
