Jacob Soboroff sounded the alarm over a “disturbing” new report from The Guardian that found U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lost count of the number of miscarriages experienced by detainees in its custody. According to government documents obtained by the outlet, ICE recorded 18 miscarriages during the first nine months of the Trump administration. However, the agency has no data on any miscarriages after Oct. 3, 2025.
“Unfortunately, there never seems to be a shortage of disturbing stories about ICE. Whether we are covering the shooting of innocent civilians or families being torn apart during raids. Sometimes, honestly, I wonder if it could get any worse, and then it does,” Soboroff said on Saturday’s “Connect.”
As the MS NOW host explained, the lack of data on miscarriage rates comes as the Trump administration is breaking records for the number of pregnant immigrants being held in detention centers. The Guardian found the Department of Homeland Security “placed more pregnant immigrants in detention last fall and winter than at any time over the previous year.”
Soboroff then shared context he said reflected how “callous” President Donald Trump’s administration has been to the detention of pregnant women, as compared to his predecessors. A 2021 directive under the Biden administration instructed ICE officers that they “should not detain, arrest, or take into custody for an administrative violation of the immigration laws individuals known to be pregnant, postpartum, or nursing unless release is prohibited by law or exceptional circumstances exist.”
“Now, fast forward to today,” Soboroff said.
The “Connect” host highlighted some of the harrowing stories in the report about women who were “swept up in this administration’s deportation campaign,” including a 35-year-old named Anabell who told The Guardian she was “soaking through a new menstrual pad every 30 minutes” before being taken to a local emergency room where she was “chained to a hospital bed” and “told she wasn’t pregnant anymore.”
“The president says they’re going after the worst of the worst, but they are going after anyone but,” Soboroff said.
The MS NOW host said the “Connect” team had reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the report. A spokesperson told them, in part, that “pregnancy in ICE detention is exceedingly rare,” but they said those who are pregnant in custody “receive regular prenatal visits, mental health services, nutritional support, and accommodations aligned with community standards of care.”
The department also said this was the “best healthcare many of these individuals have received in their entire lives,” which, Soboroff noted, isn’t a new response.
“We have literally heard that before: It was part of the DHS denial when we approached them for comment on our piece about force-feeding in ICE detention centers,” he said.
Soboroff linked The Guardian’s report to the administration’s continued crackdown on the free press, including its White House ban of reporters from MS NOW, CNN and Politico, calling it “the exact kind of story that President Trump, I suspect, does not want to be asked about. Which is why journalists from our organization and CNN and Politico are sitting on the other side of the gates this morning at the White House.” (Those media outlets, including MS NOW, have sued the White House over the ban.)
