Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif., tore into President Donald Trump over his increasingly erratic behavior after he held an impromptu 40-minute news conference at the construction site of his planned White House ballroom. The Democrat told MS NOW’s “The Weeknight” that Trump is “mentally and physically unfit and unwell to be the president of the United States.”
“I think the image of him in that ‘destruction zone’ says it all,” Kamlager-Dove said of Trump’s appearance on Tuesday. “We’re dealing with a crumbling economy, he’s got a crumbling credibility within the White House, and he is a crumbling leader.”
During the news conference, Trump stood in front of digital renderings of his ballroom and frequently had to yell over the sound of the construction equipment behind him.
After watching a clip of the president’s remarks, Kamlager-Dove characterized his behavior as “erratic” and “concerning,” telling MS NOW she believed it is “escalating” by the day. She also referenced some of Trump’s recent social media posts, which have included artificial intelligence-generated images that often seem aimed at mocking his political enemies or promoting his initiatives.
“He thinks he is Dr. Jesus. He is falling asleep in the meetings. He is posting pictures of him with aliens,” she said. “I mean, all of these things — we’re in the middle of a war, and we’ve got gas prices that are going up, and you want a president with some cognition.”
Trump “is like the crazy uncle that you want to disinvite from Thanksgiving,” the congresswoman said.
Kamlager-Dove also scolded her Republican colleagues for refusing to stand up to Trump, even after the president unveiled a $1.7 billion “slush fund” to compensate allies who believe they have been unjustly investigated by the government.
Many have raised concerns that rioters involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol could receive taxpayer payouts.
“It is a black box of a slush fund,” Kamlager-Dove said. “No accountability. You don’t know who’s going to get it, you don’t know how much.”
While some Republicans have spoken out against the move, many have remained silent.
“The thief-in-chief has still scared the bejesus out of these Republicans,” she said. “If there are some Republicans that still have a little bit of a constitution or a spine, I wish that they would stand up and raise their hand, because we are looking for them. The whole country is looking for them.”
