Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is throwing his support behind Luke Bronin in a Democratic primary challenge aimed at unseating longtime U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-Conn.

Buttigieg’s endorsement gives Bronin, 46, a significant boost in Connecticut’s 1st Congressional House race against Larson, a longtime incumbent who is seeking a 15th term. Larson, 77, has represented the 1st District since 1999 and remains a powerful figure in the state’s Democratic establishment. Larson has held several leadership positions, including serving as chair of the House Democratic Caucus, when he was one of the highest-ranking House Democrats during the Obama era.

Bronin, the former mayor of Hartford, has entered the race as a younger, new generation candidate. He has framed his candidacy around the need for a new era of leadership capable of confronting rising economic anxiety, housing costs and political polarization.

“The Democratic Party needs leaders like Luke Bronin in Congress,” Buttigieg said in a press release announcing his endorsement. “As a veteran and a mayor, he understands how decisions made in Washington hit people’s everyday lives. He’ll bring the energy and focus that this moment requires to fix a broken system and deliver a more affordable and fair future.”

Buttigieg and Bronin have maintained a long-standing friendship over two decades, frequently appearing together during Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign. The pair also share similar backgrounds as Rhodes Scholars and Navy veterans— connections Bronin has highlighted often throughout his campaign.

Following the endorsement, Bronin praised Buttigieg, who is widely seen as a potential 2028 presidential contender, as “one of the most effective Democrats in the country.”

“He has the courage to do what more Democrats need to do, which is go anywhere and everywhere — including the most unfriendly territory — and make a forceful case for why Democrats have better answers,” Bronin said. “Whatever role he serves in next, Pete is an important part of the future of the Democratic Party, and his support means a lot.”

Bronin served as Hartford’s mayor from 2016 to 2024 and emerged on a larger state platform after launching his congressional campaign last year. He previously served in the Obama administration’s Treasury Department, helping establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and later worked as deputy assistant secretary for terrorist financing and financial crimes. Bronin also served as general counsel to former Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy before becoming mayor of Hartford.

Several groups pushing for advocating for generational change within the party have also backed Bronin, including liberal veterans group VoteVetsThe Bench, a group promoting younger Democratic leaders; and New Politics, which supports candidates with military service backgrounds.

This primary battle in Connecticut reflects a broader debate unfolding across the Democratic Party, where younger challengers in several states are increasingly testing veteran incumbents over questions of age, leadership style and the future direction of the party.

In Illinois, progressive organizer Kat Abughazaleh launched a challenge against veteran Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., before Schakowsky announced she would retire. In Mississippi, antitrust lawyer Evan Turnage unsuccessfully challenged longtime Rep. Bennie Thompson. In Missouri, activist Cori Bush defeated longtime Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Mo., in a generational upset that became a model for younger insurgent campaigns.

The trend has added pressure on older Democrats across the country as a new class of candidates pushes for leadership turnover and a stronger appeal to younger voters.

Bronin’s campaign has leaned heavily into that contrast, presenting the race not as an ideological revolt but as a generational handoff.

“I respect people who’ve served in Congress for decades,” Bronin said in a video when he launched his campaign, “but at a certain point it’s just time to let some new voices in.”
