OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Americans United for Separation of Church and State is speaking out after State Superintendent Ryan Walters announced his resignation on Wednesday night. He’s moving into a CEO role at the Teacher Freedom Alliance.

“It’s a tremendous win for Oklahomans. Oklahomans and the good people of Oklahoma deserve a superintendent who understands that it’s the role of families, not politicians, to decide how and when our children engage with religion,” said Rachel Laser, the President and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Laser’s group has pending litigation with Walters for policies he put in place as superintendent, and those court cases are ongoing.

“Those challenges to that curriculum, the bible infused business, all of that will continue,” said Laser.

The organization said its goal is to preserve the constitutional principle of religious freedom for everyone in the state.

Laser said she’s hopeful the new superintendent will focus on student education, inclusion, and respect for students from all religious backgrounds.
