MS NOW, CNN and Politico are suing President Donald Trump and top administration officials for banning their reporters from the White House, arguing the restrictions “could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment.”
Trump accused the outlets of unfair reporting in a Truth Social post on Friday announcing the ban, saying he was tired of “fake news,” a term he often uses to criticize factual unflattering reports about him and his administration.
In their lawsuit, the news outlets argue Trump’s statements “make clear he implemented the ban to coerce more favorable coverage of the administration from CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO, and to deter other journalists and news organizations from reporting that the President might view as unfavorable.”
MS NOW, CNN and Politico “have suffered and continue to suffer irreparable harm” from the restrictions, according to the lawsuit. The news outlets are asking a judge to immediately block the ban and restore press credentials and access to the affected journalists.
