Supporters of Donald Trump are turning on the president over his war with Iran. MS NOW spoke to voters in North Carolina, who said they are “very disappointed” in Trump, as the financial and human costs of the conflict continue to grow.
On Wednesday, ahead of a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for four U.S. service members who were killed in recent days, Trump dismissed recent polling that found support slipping for his war.
“Americans aren’t against the war,” he said. “Americans don’t want high gasoline prices, but they’re not against the war.”
The president told reporters that concerns over Tehran’s nuclear capability trump any economic worries.
“Nobody wants Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
However, it appears even Americans who backed Trump in the last election don’t agree with that analysis. One voter told MS NOW’s Alex Tabet that the war has been “taxing on everyone,” especially for households dependent on Social Security, pensions or disability benefits.
“I’m on a fixed income,” the voter said. “I’m really feeling it.”
Another voter, who said she cast her ballot for Trump three times, told MS NOW that she was especially frustrated by the president’s attempts to minimize the growing death toll. At least 18 service members have lost their lives in the conflict since February.
“We have Purple Hearts in our family. We have family with PTSD. We have special operators. So I think it’s putting them in harm’s way needlessly,” she said.
One North Carolinian told Tabet that she and her family are “very disappointed” in Trump as the war approaches its fifth month. The United States and Iran have continued to trade strikes since the president declared the ceasefire “over” earlier this month.
“It upset me that he told everybody he was gonna end it quick, and now it started all over again,” she said.
However, not all Trump voters are turning their back on the president. One told Tabet that he believes higher prices at the pump are a fair price to pay.
“If you’re b—-ing about the gas prices now, and maybe we didn’t do this, we didn’t stop Iran, and a nuke went off in this country,” he said. “What would the explanation be for someone who complains about gas prices going up?”
