The conservative Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana temporarily blocked telehealth provision of abortion pills nationwide on Friday.
Two judges appointed by President Donald Trump and one appointed by President George W. Bush unanimously ruled in favor of Louisiana’s request to temporarily halt access to mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — while a legal battle over its broader availability continues to play out.
The ruling is expected to have immediate repercussions for abortion access nationwide. Medication abortions account for the majority of abortions in the United States, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy institute that supports abortion rights.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
