Four students and a school security officer were injured in a reported stabbing at a high school in Washington state on Thursday, authorities said.

The suspect, a student at the school in Tacoma, was also injured and is in custody, police said.

The incident was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. PT at Foss High School, police said.

“The call indicated there was some type of an altercation, a stabbing that occurred at the school,” Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Officer Shelbie Boyd told reporters.

The five students and the security officer were transported to area hospitals, according to Boyd, who said the nature of their injuries is unclear at this time.

“I don’t know how many were stabbed, if there were lacerations compared to abrasions,” Boyd said.

The four student victims were transported in critical condition and are now stable, the Tacoma Fire Department said. The security officer and suspect sustained minor injuries, it said.

The scene is secure and the incident remains under investigation, the Tacoma Police Department said.
