MS NOW’s Chris Hayes said Sen. John Fetterman has changed “profoundly” in the last few years, leaving many wondering: “What exactly is going on” with the Pennsylvania Democrat?
The “All In” host made the observation after sharing details about the senator’s recent behavior, including a surprise video he taped for Republicans’ midterm convention in Texas to introduce his fellow Pennsylvania senator, Dave McCormick.
Hayes said the supportive video, which he described as “heavily edited,” came after “months of sustained speculation” about whether Fetterman will switch parties.
“Lately, he has been a harsh critic of Democrats and a darling on Fox News, where he makes regular appearances,” Hayes added.
Since his election in 2022, the senator has experienced a political shift that has seen him abandon many of the progressive ideals that helped fuel his victory, the MS NOW host explained. Fetterman has also been open about his struggles with depression, which was spurred, in part, by a stroke during that campaign.
In addition to Fetterman’s political transformation, Hayes cited new reporting from The Wall Street Journal about the senator’s behavior behind closed doors. Based on interviews with more than a dozen former aides and lawmakers, the Journal found that Fetterman appeared to have grown increasingly uninterested in the day-to-day work of governing, frequently blowing off committee hearings and meetings with constituents and state officials.
“In June, Fetterman claimed he was sick to get out of a meeting with paralyzed veterans from rural Pennsylvania. Shortly after, the Journal reports, he walked into his office completely fine to get ready for an interview on Fox,” Hayes recounted.
“It’s a really disturbing set of allegations coming from the people who work directly with Fetterman, and I can’t tell you how absolutely rare this is in Washington,” the MS NOW host said of the report. “I got to say, as someone who’s known him, interviewed him for over a decade, there’s a deeper question of whether he is still willing and able to do his job.”
