With her job as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on the line, Jeanine Pirro is facing pressure from President Donald Trump to revive a criminal case involving the renovated Reflecting Pool, which he has repeatedly said was vandalized.
“Now that people are able to see it up close, they are reporting pure VANDALISM at The Reflecting Pool,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday, alongside a screenshot of a post from a freelance photographer who shared several images he said revealed cuts in the expansion joints on the side of the pool.
“U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro should re-visit her hastily made decision,” Trump wrote. He also called the Olympic canoeist who faced a felony charge in the case “a big player in ActBlue,” a campaign fundraising platform for Democrats that Trump described as a “scam.”
Pirro’s office had charged the Olympian, David Hearn, with destruction of property, alleging that he damaged the Reflecting Pool during a visit to the National Mall in June. Hearn pleaded not guilty, saying he had reached into the water to touch the detached pool liner out of curiosity.
But Pirro moved to dismiss the case after concluding that the damage was due to “botched” work by the contractor — a decision that Trump swiftly criticized. He further bad-mouthed Pirro, his longtime personal friend and former Fox News personality, telling reporters he was “very disappointed” with her and that she “folded like an umbrella” in the case.
Trump also suggested her job was not secure when asked if he would keep her as U.S. attorney. “I haven’t made a determination,” he said Tuesday.
When asked about the president potentially firing Pirro, Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Wednesday that Trump “has the power to do that.”
“If President Trump wanted to fire anybody, right, within his administration, he understands he has the power to do that,” Blanche, said. “So when he makes a decision about whether to fire a U.S. attorney or anybody else, that’s his.”
