Three U.S. Secret Service officials have been placed on administrative leave amid an internal investigation into potential misconduct, an agency spokesperson confirmed to MS NOW.
The three officials are non-law enforcement personnel, including the Secret Service’s chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to MS NOW. The agency did not disclose the nature of the alleged misconduct or identify the other two officials.
Guglielmi has served as one of the agency’s most prominent public-facing officials, regularly speaking on behalf of the Secret Service and responding to questions about presidential security and other protective operations.
The incident is being investigated by the Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility. A spokesperson said the agency is committed to the “highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”
“Our critical work demands that our workforce maintain an unwavering commitment to duty, honesty, and courage in all aspects of their jobs,” the spokesperson told MS NOW in a statement. “We will continue to pursue the level of excellence that is worthy of the mission which has been entrusted to us by the American people.”
The investigation follows heightened scrutiny of the Secret Service’s operations and security practices after multiple assassination attempts targeting President Donald Trump during the 2024 campaign, including the rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, that wounded him and a separate incident at his Florida golf club.
It also unfolds amid a federal leak investigation tied to media reports about presidential security and Air Force One. The probe intensified after reports raised concerns about the defensive capabilities of the Qatari-donated Boeing 747 being used as Air Force One. In response to the reports, the FBI asked some government officials to turn over their phones to investigators. The Justice Department also subpoenaed New York Times journalists in an effort to identify the sources of national security information, though those subpoenas were later withdrawn.
The scrutiny over the media leak deepened after subsequent reporting revealed that an Iranian threat against Trump prompted an elaborate security operation during his July trip to Turkey. Trump was secretly moved off Air Force One and flown out of the country aboard another military aircraft while staff and journalists continued aboard the presidential plane, unaware the president was no longer with them.
It was not immediately clear whether the administrative leave or misconduct investigation is connected to that leak investigation. The Secret Service did not provide additional details about the incident that prompted the officials to be placed on leave.
The agency also did not say how long the officials are expected to remain on administrative leave or provide a timeline for the Office of Professional Responsibility investigation.
