A federal judge in California temporarily paused Paramount’s $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. on Monday in response to a request from a dozen Democratic state attorneys general who sued to block the mega-merger.
Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin of the Northern District of California granted the states’ request for a temporary restraining order. The order prevents the companies from directly “closing or consummating the transaction or taking any steps, directly or indirectly, to integrate or consolidate their operations pursuant to the transaction” for two weeks while the judge weighs the states’ bid to secure a long-term injunction.
A permanent preliminary injunction would freeze the merger while the remainder of the legal process unfolds. The judge has set a hearing on that motion for Aug. 3.
