Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., slammed the Supreme Court after the Republican-appointed majority approved the Trump administration’s controversial changes to a federal database to review state voter rolls for potential noncitizens. Raskin told MS NOW’s Alicia Menendez the ruling was a “threat to voting rights” and revealed what he believes is the only “antidote” to the administration’s “11th-hour effort” to meddle in elections.
The Friday decision came after three conservative justices sided with the liberals to reject President Donald Trump’s restrictions on mail-in voting earlier this month. The Maryland Democrat said the latest ruling shows the court is “not willing to do the right thing twice in a row.”
“President Trump exploded at them when they shut down his post office scheme to take over the elections and berated them and worked the refs,” he said. “And now they came back with this decision.”
Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, said the ruling will allow for the “creation of a massive federal government database,” which he said the administration has been attempting to do since Trump retook the White House.
“The Congress rejected this whole idea in the SAVE Act,” the Democrat continued, referring to Trump’s massive voting overhaul legislation, which is currently stalled in the Senate.
“Congress has not wanted to have anything to do with this, and yet they’ve now allowed the federal government to set it up,” he said.
Raskin advised voters across the country to “go ahead and vote early” so “if anybody asserts that there’s some kind of problem, it can be worked out early.”
He also told Menendez those “furious” with the court’s decision and Trump’s “intervention in the electoral process” that “the thing to do is to build a landslide” victory for Democrats, “so it’s too big to rig, too real to steal.”
“They’re not going to be able to get around the massive force of huge majorities coming out all across the country,” he said. “That is really the antidote to this 11th-hour effort to derail the election.”
