Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushed his hypermasculine, transphobic propaganda at the Iowa State Fair on Wednesday, using a slur for transgender people during a political speech.
“We’re restoring the warrior ethos inside our department because that matters,” the former Fox News host told fairgoers, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the large cross tattoo on his right arm. “At the Department of War, we do training — not trannies,” he added.
The Trump regime’s bigotry and bravado can’t shield its ineptitude.
That a sitting defense secretary — one currently leading a deadly war in Iran — would even take time to deliver an overtly political speech at this venue epitomizes the Trump regime’s anti-trans hysterics, including its ban on trans troops in the military, its utter defiance of ethics and its lack of focus on issues of real import like its own failings.
The Iran war is a prime example of this. Neither Hegseth nor his boss, Donald Trump, appear to have a clue how to end this war, with its significant death toll, including 18 U.S. service members, and catastrophic economic impacts. So perhaps, Hegseth’s bigoted tough-guy act might be more convincing if he had results to show for it. But the failure, under his leadership, to bring Iran to heel or even secure the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz — as Trump has said could be achieved easily — is on display for all the world to see.
And the president’s petulant online tantrums and threats certainly don’t give the impression that he or the military officials he’s leading are competent, “manly” men who have everything under control. Put another way, the Trump regime’s bigotry and bravado can’t shield its ineptitude.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a former naval officer, on Wednesday condemned the Trump regime’s handling of the Iran war and, in particular, its response to the crisis of troops enduring squalid conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
In a social media post identifying what she sees as strategic blunders by the Trump regime, Sherrill said, “Hegseth’s grave incompetence is made worse by his continuing efforts to politicize the military.”
And the sight of the defense secretary barking an anti-trans slur amid the fried food stands and carnival games at the Iowa State Fair only bolsters her point.
