While traveling to different states to campaign on behalf of progressive candidates in primary races, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., teased a possible presidential run in 2028.
“I mean, I can’t say that I’ve ruled it out,” the lawmaker told Politico.
Ocasio-Cortez made the comment after spending the weekend in Michigan, where she was rallying alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in support of Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
It is the clearest answer Ocasio-Cortez has given on the matter. Asked during a political event in Chicago in May if she would run, she said that “What’s funny is they assume my ambition is a title or a seat. My ambition is to change this country. Presidents come and go. Senate, House seats, elected officials come and go.”
During her lengthy speech to the crowd in Detroit on Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez bashed the Trump administration as “corrupt” and called for a new generation of leaders, including El-Sayed.
“You deserve a politics that treats the disease and not just the symptoms of what brought us Donald Trump, that doesn’t negotiate with or placate corruption, but one that defeats it once and for all,” she said.
Despite having made relatively fewer endorsements this election cycle, Ocasio-Cortez has been successful in backing winning candidates she believes will prioritize the working class, like Analilia Mejia for New Jersey’s 11th District and Adam Hamawy for New Jersey’s 12th District.
