MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace cautioned the American public to look at President Donald Trump and his family’s “astronomical” corruption as more than just a “punch line in jokes.”
She issued the warning on Thursday’s “Deadline: White House,” pointing to a recent scandal involving Donald Trump Jr. This week, ProPublica reported that a Russian oligarch funded a wedding celebration for Trump’s eldest son in May.
The MS NOW host played a montage of comedians joking about the revelation, including Josh Johnson of “The Daily Show” and late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel. Wallace said the clips were proof that the Trump family’s “public, rampant and brazen and enthusiastic grifting and corruption” has now “leaped out of the confines of shows like this one and investigative journalism, and has become so accepted in our culture that it is literally the punch line in jokes.”
While she acknowledged the comedians’ jokes about the situation are funny, she stressed that “the fact that a Russian oligarch is so close to the president and his family that he gifted the president’s son — who is also a gazillionaire — a gift worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, is deeply alarming from a national security perspective.”
“In any other universe, it would be condemned and then investigated without any question,” she added. “But this is Earth 2 that that family lives on, and on Earth 2, conflicts of interest and self-dealing and national security risks are really just part of the Trump brand.”
That brand, according to Wallace, has created an American presidency “where corruption is baked into our culture.”
