Republican primary voters have rallied behind some unusual candidates in recent months, but among gubernatorial nominees, Colorado’s Victor Marx stands out — and not in a good way.
The Republican candidate, who just barely won his primary race in June, is perhaps best known for claiming that an abusive stepfather effectively forced Marx, at just 7 years old, to kill a man.
Asked in May how many people he has killed since then, the GOP candidate paused before asking Kyle Clark, an anchor at the NBC affiliate in Denver, “Does it matter?” Marx went on to call it an “odd question.” (For the record, there are lingering questions about whether Marx actually killed a man as a child, and according to local law enforcement, there are unsolved murders from that time period.)
But as it turns out, this is not the only thing that makes Marx so unusual. The Coloradan, who founded a group called All Things Possible Ministries, has also talked about his work performing exorcisms, some of which he claims to have completed over the phone.
With this in mind, Talking Points Memo reported:
Talking Points Memo has unearthed audio of Marx detailing one of these encounters with arguably the most powerful demon of them all. “Hey, I’ve met the devil,” Marx said. “I’ve met Satan in person, through a person.” […]
Marx’s description of the encounter with “Satan” … came in a two-part episode of his podcast that was published on YouTube in February 2020.
This dovetails with TPM’s other reporting on Marx’s 2024 book, in which the Republican shared anecdotes about people inhabited by demons, some of whom displayed “reptilian” eyes, “pointy” ears, and “superhuman strength.”
It’s also worth noting that Marx has confronted more mundane controversies, including allegations that his campaign has tried to circumvent campaign finance laws.
Marx will face Phil Weiser, the Democratic state attorney general, in November. Voters in Colorado haven’t elected a Republican governor in more than two decades, and under the circumstances, it seems likely that the streak will continue for another four years.
A recent Slate report noted that party insiders not only expect Marx to lose badly, they’re also concerned that having him at the top of the GOP ballot “could imperil other Republican seats in the statehouse and Congress, plunging the fractured, marginalized party into chaos.”
