At least three people are dead and multiple others are injured, including three police officers, after a shooting Wednesday at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, officials said.
The Minneapolis Police Department said officers were responding to a shooting involving multiple victims around 4:30 p.m. local time. Officers encountered victims and followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor, where a haze significantly limited their visibility.
One officer sustained what authorities described as a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, while another officer was in surgery, Sgt. Garrett Parton, Minneapolis police public information officer, told reporters at a press conference. A third officer was being evaluated for non-life-threatening injury.
Four other people with apparent gunshot wounds transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where one later died, Parton said. Another person was found dead at the scene.
The suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene. Police said it was not immediately known how the suspected shooter died.
Authorities said the shooting appeared to be criminal in nature and was not being investigated as an act of terrorism.
Authorities urged the public to avoid a large section of downtown while police and emergency personnel worked at the scene. Police asked people to stay out of the area to allow emergency crews to safely conduct response operations.
The FBI said it was aware of the shooting and had responded to the area to assist Minneapolis police.
Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz said he is grateful to law enforcement and is “praying for our first responders.”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said she had spoken with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey about what she called the “horrific shootings with multiple victims” and urged people to stay away from the area as authorities worked to secure the scene.
“My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones,” Klobuchar said.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said his office was in contact with law enforcement and awaiting additional information.
“Jacquie and I are praying for the Minneapolis police officers involved in this tragedy and all the victims,” Emmer said.
Minneapolis police emphasized that information about the shooting remained preliminary and said additional details would be released as they became available.
